Is advertising or applying to websites like SEEK enough?

Latte, newspaper, glasses and pen

Jobs ads have come a long way. This is the future.

When was the last time a paper résumé was posted to your office in response to a job ad? It’s almost hard to believe that 20 years ago, that was standard practice.

Before the web, most people sourced work through ads in their local or state paper, physically went into an office to fill out an application form or posted printed résumés to companies they found in the Yellow Pages.

Each of these methods is now outdated and almost irrelevant to today’s jobseeker and recruitment manager. This change has occurred in less than two decades.

Companies now advertise online using career sites like Seek, Indeed and Career One, their company website, or social media platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook.

Seek has been in operation for 18 years, has exposure to more than 4.1 billion people, has more than 375 million visitors a month and, at any given time, more than three million job opportunities and 100 million jobseekers.

Facebook was founded in 2004 and has more than a billion active users. In February this year, it launched a new feature where companies can now advertise jobs and jobseekers can apply without having to leave Facebook.

LinkedIn launched in 2003. Since that time it has grown to be available in 24 languages, have more than 10,000 permanent employees and more than 500 million members.

Each new platform presents another opportunity to advertise a job. Some companies are now even using video advertising to promote the jobs they have available.

According to this article from Drew Hendricks, published in March, advertising is set to become more dynamic, personal and automatically integrated. This is already occurring to some extent, with websites you visit able to track you and retarget you with advertising on the sites you visit later. Imagine in the future if, via social media, a video advertising your company’s vacancy could appear in the feed of every suitable candidate within your geographical location? It may not be too far off.

So, with all these options, is it enough to just use SEEK to advertise or look for a vacant position? Probably not. Online advertising will probably deliver results but jobseekers are using social media  in their job search. It is rare to find a company not using LinkedIn. You just need to spread the net wider to get the best candidates possible.
