Have you ever hung on to a mining job just long enough to see the Christmas bonus safely in your bank account and then handed in your notice?
The festive season has a nickname unique to the Australian mining industry. It’s “happy snatch-it” time! The idea? That the end of the year is the time when many mining employees leave one job for another.
But is it a real thing? Do more mining industry employees really leave at the end of the year, or is it just something we notice more at Christmas?
We wanted to find out. So happy snatch-it season is the topic of this month’s Mining People Polling/Media Centre poll. (You can take part here.)
New Year’s resolutions and happy snatch-it
Based on the anecdotal evidence, happy snatch-it makes a lot of sense. Christmas is a time when most of us take a step back and think about our lives. Many of us will make New Year’s resolutions. And for many of us, those resolutions will be about our jobs. If you’ve been unhappy, it makes sense that the new year might be the time you decide to do something about it.
And if you have skills that are in demand in the mining industry, the logic flows that you might effectively be able to leave a job on a Friday and on the following Monday jump on a new plane with a new shirt with a new logo and head for a new mine site. In that case, why wouldn’t you make the move? (The reality, of course, might be slightly different.)
Is the grass ever greener?
As we love to say, the grass is rarely greener on the other side. When you wake up in the morning, in that new room, in that new camp, ready to go off to your new job, the person looking back at you in the mirror won’t have changed.
