No one could have imagined 2020 would turn out the way it has. But six months after our world changed completely, it seems like a good time to check in and see how you’re coping.
We know a lot of people in our industry have been through a lot.
Perhaps many of us should feel like the lucky ones: many of us live in Western Australia — a place that has managed to control the virus thanks to some extremely tough measures.
But it’s those tough measures — the hard border, the quarantining policy — that have proven particularly tough for anyone who works in the WA mining industry who doesn’t live in the state. Families have been separated. Lives have been turned upside down. A difficult time has been made even more challenging.
Mining could be considered one of the bright spots in an economy battered by COVID-19, as many mines have continued to operate. But mining companies are still throwing best laid plans out the window in order to cope with the new reality facing the industry. Perhaps, in time, it will lead to incredible innovation and improvements in our industry, but right now across the industry and the country, people are losing their livelihoods.
