Poll: Is training standing in the way of your next promotion?

Hands up at a training course

In this month’s Mining People poll, we’re interested in the effect training opportunities have had on promotions and career progression.

For some people, a job is a job. But for many of us, a job is an important step on our career ladder. We plan for promotion, strive for the next opportunity, and perhaps even map out our entire career.

In this month’s Mining People poll, we’re interested in the effect training opportunities have on promotions and career opportunities.

Is your company providing you with the training, the upskilling, and the educational opportunities you need in order to be ready to take the next step in your career? Or have you been left funding vital skills training and courses yourself?

Skills, training and promotions

Have you already missed out on promotions because you don’t have some of the skills, training or qualifications the job requires? Are you willing to leave your current employer for one who will give you the skills and training you need to advance your career?

It’s a fascinating topic at a time when the mining industry is experiencing an ongoing skills shortage. There’s a general belief in the wider community that job opportunities abound. But as anyone who works in mining knows, it’s not always that easy to land the mining job of your dreams. Mining companies still want the best-qualified candidates for any role — and if those candidates come already qualified and experienced, so much the better.

What has your experience been? When are you hoping for your next promotion? And what will you have to do to put yourself in the best position to be successful?

Tell us your thoughts in this month’s poll. All answers are completely anonymous. Results will be published in early May 2022.
